Planning a Writing Workshop? Start Here!

Putting their own words on a page is the best way to encourage young readers to flip through the pages of books around them. But hosting a group of excited aspiring writers can feel dauting.  Here are 5 tips to help you get started.

Set Clear Objectives

Start with a solid game plan. Define the goals of the workshop, such as sparking creativity, improving writing skills, or encouraging storytelling.

Choose a Theme or Prompt

Think about the theme of your workshop. Select a theme, prompt, or story starter that will inspire children to write. Will it be a magical adventure in a far-off land or a mystery-solving mission? Let your imagination run wild! Remember, the key is to make it engaging and fun for the kids.

Supplies Galore

No workshop is complete without the right supplies. Stock up on colorful pens, markers, stickers, and, of course, plenty of paper. Prepare writing stations with supplies and a notebook for each child. You might also want to throw in some fun props or costumes to spark their creativity. The more interactive, the better!

Warm It Up & Mix It Up

Start with a warm-up activity to get children excited and engaged. Make sure to also incorporate games and activities to maintain engagement. A quick storytelling session can encourage them to think outside the box and let their imaginations soar.

Don't Forget the Snackies

No workshop is complete without snacks! Keep the energy levels up with some pre-packaged tasty treats or themed snacks.  Be sure to ask about any food allergies and prepare accordingly.
